FINDING OUR WAY -- LIVING WITH DYING IN AMERICA

A groundbreaking series of articles, Finding Our Way: Living with Dying in America, was carried last Fall in newspapers across the country.  The series, distributed by Knight-Ridder Tribune, serves as a short course on death and dying and covers a variety of topics related to the subject. The practical advice, resources, and personal stories in 'Finding Our Way' can teach how to approach these most significant life events with the same kind of planning and emotional preparedness people strive for in the rest of their lives.

The series of 15 articles are now available for downloading at:

www.findingourway.net/downloads.htm.

Individuals may read all of the articles now on the 'Finding Our Way' Web site, and there are many other resources for caregivers available on the website at:

FINDING OUR WAY:  LIVING WITH DYING IN AMERICA -- The Online Course

A new web resource, "Finding Our Way:  Living with Dying in America -- The Online Course" is now available to all Americans at <www.scu.edu/fow>.

This free, web-based course is part of the Finding Our Way national public education initiative focused on bringing practical information on end-of-life issues to the American public.  The course is completely self-paced and all course materials are included on the web.  This online course grew out of a 15-part national newspaper series distributed by Knight Ridder/Tribune that appeared in more than 160 newspapers and reached millions last year.

For questions regarding the course or the newspaper series, please contact Kavin Harris by e-mail at kharris@sojourncommunications.com or by phone at 703-556-6800.

VALUES CLARIFICATION:

Here are nine questions to help your family know how you feel about your goals for your medical treatment. Use this as a starting point for advance care planning.

  1. How do you feel about your current health?
  2. How important are independence and self-sufficiency in your life?
  3. How do you imagine handling illness, disability, dying and death?
  4. How might your personal relationships affect medical decision- making, especially near the end of life?
  5. What role should doctors and other health professionals play in such decisions?
  6. What kind of living environment would be acceptable to you if you became seriously ill or disabled? Would you want to live in a nursing home or assisted living facility? Receive in-home care?
  7. How much should the cost to your family be a part of the decision-making process?
  8. What role do religious or spiritual beliefs play in decisions about your health care?  What are your thoughts about living life’s final stages? What are your hopes and fears?
  9. What are your thoughts about living life’s final stages? What are your hopes and fears?
